Ethernet extension: Structured cabling challenge

24 Nov 22Industrial networks, Other industries

Energy management is a hot topic right now. Our Networks team recently visited one of the world’s leaders in technology and digital transformation, working to build a sustainable energy future for all.

Customer challenge

To meet the growing demand for Ethernet connections, our customer wanted to standardize and extend its existing RJ45 copper and fiber Ethernet installation.
The main challenge was to successfully cover the entire site with RJ45 structured cabling, while the number of consumers (RJ45 Ethernet sockets) and their exact locations were not yet known with certainty.
In addition, the new network had to be deployed while keeping production running, and without disrupting site personnel.

Solution implemented by our teams

Our teams designed and deployed the entire passive F.O. and RJ45 copper network architecture.

This study, carried out in close collaboration with the customer, was based on a global number of RJ45 connections distributed by sector: 600 connections spread over an area of around 6,500m².

Some key figures for this project :

460 hours of site design and supervision

  • Network architecture study and design
  • Design and production of a layout plan for RJ45 zone boxes
  • Design and production of layout plans for new network cabinets
  • Sizing new cable trays
  • Creation of a standard label showing the location of each zone box and RJ45 connector.
  • Drafting of test reports for fiber optic and copper certifications

160 hours of CAD (Computer-Aided Design)

  • Layout plan for RJ45 consolidation boxes
  • Production of electrical and DATA drawings for new cabinets
  • DATA cable list creation

2900 hours of site work

  • Construction of 3 new 19″ DATA cabinets, equipped with UPS.
  • Installation of 1,000 meters of new walkways.
  • Laying 1,300 meters of single-mode fiber optic cable, divided into 7 separate segments.
  • Installation of 30,000 meters of RJ45 Cat7a SFTP POE++ 1500MHz cable
  • 384 fiber optic connections
  • Installation of 120 RJ45 consolidation boxes
  • Connection of 1200 RJ45 Cat6A SFTP connectors
  • Deployment of 23 WIFI access points
  • Fiber optic and copper segment validation tests to ISO/IEC 11801 Class Ea standards

6-month project

Gain for the customer

The proposed technical solution, combined with the use of RJ45 consolidation boxes, enables modularity and flexible management of structured cabling.

We succeeded in deploying 600 RJ45 connection points throughout the factory, without knowing exactly where the users would end up, and without disturbing the production units that were still running, to the customer’s complete satisfaction.
